Good morning fellow pilgrims of the Labyrinth.
The first Friday of October is upon us. I can’t believe time washes over us so quickly. Only months ago I was sipping dark long blacks, eating freshly caught fish, and basking in the fetid sunlight of the Bismarck Sea. Weeks ago I hiked through the dry Los Padres forest, discussing philosophy with my friend The Dark Forest. Now I find myself in the low country surrounded by the beauty of the marshland. Roaming down roads lined by ancient trees covered in Spanish moss and magnificent houses built over two hundred years ago.
The land out here feels old. There’s a spiritual depth and volume to it that doesn’t exist in the desert sand of California. Every few blocks I come across a cemetery. Often the tombstones are so old that the names are long faded and forgotten.
I’ve always considered myself a man of the West. Ultimately homeless. It might take me a while to feel at home on such old soil.
But now I am tired. Travel has taken it out of me. I need rest.
Projects
I have a lot of writing projects to work on in the next few months. Several short pieces and the novel I am working on. This Substack is becoming my main non-fiction writing outlet. The format and community are the best one can find online and it doesn’t have the schizophrenic chaos of Twitter.
I’ve reorganized the categories for the newsletter, dividing it into several sub-newsletters.
Main – The main newsletters will be my weekly Dispatch from the Bug World anything and everything that I feel like writing about, current events, discussions from elsewhere, random thoughts, and updates on my work. This will be a weekly newsletter.
Articles – Long-form pieces on one topic. For example, I wrote about the idea of Sacred Place and Mircea Eliade. These will come as needed.
Reviews – Book, film, and music reviews. When I finish something worth reviewing.
Fiction – New or reprinted fiction for paid subscribers. Minimum monthly, but if I have more ready I will put it out here first.
Let me know if you want me to write on any certain topic or review a specific book. I probably won’t but you never know, I might. Until next time. Stay safe while traveling the labyrinth.
It's amazing how we can feel the pulse of different geographical locations. For example, whenever I set foot off of an airplane and step onto Greek soil I feel the weight of my entire ancestry. Maybe I'm crazy. I don't know. I feel different vibrations when I go to Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, California . . . anywhere.
I'm glad you seem to have found a good home man. The South is beautiful. May it be good for your family and for your writing!
Review Dracula (book) lol
