I agree Season 1 was a masterpiece not to be topped. It still haunts me and led me to start reading weird fiction (I was already down with noir). Season 3 was a wonderful return to form though, obviously, couldn’t match the magic of the original.
Where we diverge is I think Season 2 was unwatchable. Slapped together plot. Weird action scenes thrown in. It was bad.
Still, thanks for saving me from watching Season 4.
I massively enjoyed TD, in the same order as you: 1, 3, then 2. So far s3 is the only one I haven't rewatched. Only yesterday I saw publicity for s4 and because I don't have HBO it is likely that it will be some time before I get to see it. I doubt I'll have forgotten your review but may still give it a try. What a shame.
Where I am it's the final episode of Fargo s5 streaming today. A very mixed bag, all the main characters are cut-outs, and an episode which turns out to all have been a dream was really scraping the barrel. Nonetheless quite enjoyable. It's about the only one of these anthology series that has kept going without a complete crash-and-burn.
The HBO production that could have squeezed more out of a limited series, but didn't, was The Night Of. I'll be honest and say that the cat storyline was the best bit ;-)
I watched the first three seasons of Fargo, with the first being great, the one with Kirsten and Meat Damon being ok, and the third being overall meh, but yeah, I really liked the first one with Billy Bob.

I'm about 15 minutes into the episode, and I'm not terribly impressed so far. They're just trying way too damn hard to ape the atmospherics of the first and third seasons, without understanding what made that stuff work in the first place.
The first season of True Detective is a top 3 HBO production of all time. The second season was okay, but the quality varied wildly from episode to episode, sometimes scene to scene. The third season was mildly better, but became a bit of slog halfway through.
I'm not a toxic bro or fanboy, just a nice middle-aged lady who loved Season 1, and S4 Episode 1 sucked. Bye TD, it was nice knowing ya!
Nooooo. I loved the first season so much. They should have just stopped there.
I liked 2 and 3 even tho they had faults.

I watched all of it. It was a C+
Not like the others.
Best part was seeing 62 year old Jodie Foster being banged.
That was also the worst part.
That was also my favorite part.
This is the consequence of giving unqualified people writing jobs just because they, and their stories, check certain demographic boxes.

Haven't watched any of it. The trailers always turned me off.
